The correct way to pronounce Dubai is…

0

This will always be debatable.

I recently met someone who pronounces Dubai as “Du-bay” and it sounds cute.  This was the very first time I’ve heard of it.

I searched online and found this blog post titled, “How To Pronounce The Names of 24 Famous Places You‘ve Mispronounced Your Entire Life.” The emirate is one of them. The Daily Mail also has a similar article saying that “Du-bye” is wrong.

I tried to further research if the reason could be the lack of “bye/buy” sound in Arabic, but there seems to be no factual English reference online.

So, I checked Wikipedia, and it says:
 (/dˈb/ doo-byArabicدبي‎ DubayyGulf pronunciation: [dʊˈbɑj])

It could probably be the correct native pronunciation. But most expats and the world though, know and embrace it as “Du-bye.”

Imagine these brands and events pronounced the “Du-bay” way:

Du-bay Eye, Du-bay 92, Du-bay World Cup, Du-bay Tennis Championships, Du-bay Shopping Festival, and so on.
Have you read any resource about it? Appreciate if you could also share relevant theories in the comments below. Thanks.

Is J.Co Donuts in Dubai fake?

2

The official J.Co website says it all, though there’s really no official black and white announcement about it until this date. If you visit www.jcodonuts.com, a popup like the screenshot above will show.

Rumors of being a fake franchise started when this screenshot of a reply from ‘supposedly’ the JCo customer service email support (hello@jcodonuts.com), surfaced, few days after the store in Al Ghurair Centre opened.

This post below from a certain ‘Andro Amadeus Chavez’ who ‘introduced himself’ as an area manager of a J.Co branch in the Philippines added fuel to the fire. Interestingly, the name cannot be found anymore from a Google search.

Curiously, the link to JCo Philippines Twitter account on the website is wrong. It is linking to https://twitter.com/JCOPhilippines1 which is not totally Jco PH. Hmmm…

J.Co Donuts operate legitimately in only 4 Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines.

What I can’t understand is, who and why, in the right mind of a true business person would he pursue a popular business that will have obvious legal repercussions as far as franchising and patent rules are concerned? Or maybe such things doesn’t exist? How about the tight scrutiny of Dubai Chamber of Commerce of the franchise’s registration? …if indeed it is fake. Just asking…

I never tried the donuts here yet. Didn’t have the patience to fall in line for a piece of fake, i mean, cake. But the public shares different opinions. Some says it tastes authentic, many rues the glaring difference in texture, flavor and fluffiness. The reviews on Facebook are full of disappointments and dissatisfaction.

First day high. Fans of J.Co patiently queued for hours to get through their favorite donuts.

So what happens next? I also want to know.

New process of passport renewal at the Philippine Consulate in Dubai

25

I just renewed my passport few weeks ago at the Philippine Consulate General office in Qusais and noticed there was a slight addition to the process. It still looks as easy as 1-2-3 but in reality, well, it could make you hungry.

I booked an appointment 2 weeks prior and luckily still got an available slot.  That’s very rare.

It was Thursday afternoon. I reached the consulate 25 minutes ahead of my 2:20 appointment. Still, it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete the process.

Here’s what I went through and how:

STEP 1: Secure an appointment online
Click here or copy and paste this address -> http://dubaipcg.checkappointments.com to your browser to book an appointment. Register a new account or login with your existing PCG account, if already a member.

I advise to do this at least 8 months before your passport’s expiration as the schedule could be full for 2-3 months ahead.  Make sure also that you won’t travel in the next 2-3 months.

You will receive an email confirmation like the one below if your appointment is confirmed.

Note: Children 5 years old and below don’t need appointments.

Before your appointment date, prepare the following documents, along with your expiring passport:

  1. Download, print and fill-up the e-Passport application form – click here to download. Bring a blank copy of this when you go to the consulate in case the checker identifies some errors on your filled-up form.
  2. Minimum o2 copies of the following pages of your passport:
    1. Passport info page
    2. Emergency contact page
    3. Residence visa page
  3. Copy of the confirmed appointment email

Note: Better prepare more copies of your documents. Sometimes, they’ll ask for more of it. It won’t hurt if you have extras than to hassle your way photocopying on your appointment date.

STEP 2: Appearance day – go to the screening room
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. The screening room is currently at the first tent to your left upon entering the consulate – the Moneygram tent.

Clip all your document copies and signed application form with your passport and place it at the tray corresponding with the first letter of your last name and time of appointment.

Wait for your name to be called and your documents verified.

Once confirmed, you will be given an invoice to be paid at the cashier.

STEP 3: Pay
Go to Room 3 (as of today), and pay AED240.

STEP 4: New Overseas Absentee Voting (mandatory) registration
Go to Room 4. They will give you an OAV form. Fill it up. Hand it over, along with another passport copy, to the usher and wait for your turn.

I waited for 45 minutes to get called. I was standing because there’s no ample seating.

While waiting, you will hear the same usher selling dinuguan, pansit, kwek-kwek, adobo, etc. Better go to the consulate full so not to endure eating in a plastic container on your lap.

I had to queue for another 10/15 minutes inside. After registering my info and getting my biometrics, picture and digital signature done, they gave me a small paper which is my OAV acknowledgment receipt (below).

STEP 5: Passport renewal encoding
You will be directed to the next room where you have to queue for another 45 minutes to an hour.  On your turn, they’ll get your documents, biometrics, digital signature and your selfie.

On observation, processing takes 5 minutes more or less for every person. So see how many people are ahead of you and do the math.

Release of new passport takes 6-8 weeks. You can check its status here: http://www.dubaipcg.dfa.gov.ph/index.php/services/passports/available-for-release-2015

UPDATE: I got mine in 6 weeks.

Once ready, bring your receipt (below) and your Emirates ID or old passport to claim.

Remember, the best thing to bring with you on the renewal date is your PATIENCE. Bring lots of it.

Dubai Canvas 3D Art Festival at The Beach

2

Several years back these mind-boggling pavement 3D art from Europe became viral. I’m always amazed at the talent, the unfathomable creativity and the dedication of their creators.

Thanks to #DubaiCanvas we’re able to personally discover more about these fascinating 3D art. This weekend we went to The Beach.

Kurt Wenner, founding father of 3D pavement art, and his colleagues showcased their works along with select Emarati artists. Other world famous 3D artists who participated in the festival includes Gregor Wosik, Juandres Vera, Anthony Cappetto, Cuboliquido, Julie Kirk Purcell, Tracy Lee Stum, Leon Keer, Peter Westerink and Cesar Paredes Pacora.

For us, the challenge is to think of a “good acting pose” while taking photos with the artworks. But hey, acting in front of a crowd is not too cool of an idea huh.

At 12 midday, the shadow is a spoiler.

Here are some snaps from my mobile phone:

Our entry to the #DubaiCanvas Instagram contest – our little one hangin’ tough out there 🙂

The sand dunes
The only artwork which we’re not allowed to take photos at the right platform. We had to give our phones to the staff.

Abra! But the shadow 🙁

Another abra, and shadow.
It took us time to find the right pose and shot, but failed. No thanks to the shadow, again.
I know. What am I doing?
Could have been better if enhanced
Not 3D, but equally stunning. My sister tried to spot the best position.

Family Barbecue Lunch at C.Taste Centro Sharjah

0

Few weeks ago, we were at the Family Barbecue Lunch at C.Taste in Centro Sharjah.  We had barbecue lunch by the pool while the little one is busy with the other kids for some entertaining games. Not too long after, we found ourselves lazing at the pool.

There’s a wide range of buffet menu that includes antipasti, mezzeh, salads, freshly baked breads and pastries and assorted pizzas. There are also broiled ones like salmon fillet, mignon beef with rosemary and garlic, rib eye steak, herb lamb cutlets, kubeida, seafood paella, lamb ossobucco and more.  Servings of piping hot meat from the grill is non-stop. And of course, desserts.

Aya, my 2 year old, got so busy with art activities and later joined the other kids for the games and giveaways.

What followed the sumptuous barbecue indulgence was a lengthy soaking by the pool.

After bathing, we stroll around the greens at the hotel. It was very comfortable that we feel we’re relaxing at our own backyard.

The cost for family (couple plus kids below 12 years old) is AED 250. If guest is single diner, it’s AED125.

Here are other photos from our experience:

Hmmm…

Sweet indulgence indeed

750,000+ expats excited for Jollibee in Dubai Mall

0
My friend, Morris, send me this photo from his Facebook feeds.

Confirmed! The bee is coming to town – the real, witty, happy, yummy jolly bee!  The reason why McDonald’s is only number 2 in the Philippines.

For many of us overseas Filipinos, Jollibee is a childhood icon that never leaves us ’til we grow old. It never fails to bring out the kid in us. Regardless of how many fried chicken variants we’ve already tried in Dubai, we’re still longing, still craving for that home-y juicy-licious, crispy-liscious Chickenjoy.

The opening of the real Jollibee food chain in Dubai is like a coming of a long-lost family or best friend. Seriously! And we’re talking about Filipino adults here.

Very soon 750,000+ Filipino expats don’t have to “habilin” a Yumburger or chickenjoy pasalubong from the Philippines. Burger Steak with steamed rice, Jolly Hotdog, Jolly Spaghetti, Palabok… we can’t wait to introduce these favorites to our friends in Dubai.

Jollibee, for many of us, is the national fast food of the Philippines. This will surely be Dubai Mall’s next biggest attraction.

0

Kites, indeed, is a visual poetry in motion.  If you hadn’t flown a kite in your childhood, you might have not had a great one, as they say 😉

Over 70 kite flyers from 25 countries participated in the 2nd Dubai International Kite Festival (DIKF). In addition that, hundreds of families brought in their own kites to fly and showcase as well. It was a great, fun activity for each and everyone of all ages.

The festival which was held at the Jumeirah Kite Beach (Sunset Beach) is part of the 20th Dubai Shopping Festival.

Activities of the participating teams include synchronized kite flying, sports kite flying, kite surfing, kite buggying, kite boarding, fly boarding , wake boarding and night kite flying with illumination.

There were also many other side events on the beach like face painting, kite making workshop, balloon bending, portrait artists, spot photography, food courts, music and dance performances.

We came a little too early when many participants were still setting-up, hence the photos below. Here are some snaps from the last day of the festival:

Filipino basketball fans in the UAE have another reason to be happy.  PBA superstar Mark Caguioa, Gilas Pilipinas standout Gabe Norwood and prolific rookie Stanley Pringle are bringing their teams to play two official PBA Governor’s Cup games in Dubai.

The league’s most popular club Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, the formidable Rain or Shine Elastopainters and the beefed up Globalport Batang Pier will surely give the Filipinos a grand treat of Philippine-brand basketball.

May 22, 2015 – Rain Or Shine vs. Ginebra

All games will be played at Al Shabab Al Arabi Club, Mamzar in Dubai (near Century Mall).

Who’s coming?

If the current team rosters today remain intact come Governors Cup, here are some of the players to watch out in the Dubai games:

Caguioa will be joined by Jayjay Helterbrand to showcase the iconic ‘Fast and Furious’ tandem of the PBA. Twin towers Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter, Mac Baracael, LA Tenorio, Joseph Yeo and Dorian Peña make up the royal lineup of Barangay Ginebra.  Ato Agustin heads the stellar coaching staff which also includes Allan Caidic and Olsen Racela.
