PR – With the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships kicking off in just under a week from now, sports fans are in for a treat this year with top tennis action on offer on all courts throughout the fortnight, including courts 1, 2 and 3 for which entry is free.

Tournament Director Salah Tahlak said today “We are delighted that fans will be able to see the world’s best in action at this year’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. As we have so many top players competing, it is guaranteed that a number of them will play some early round matches on courts 1, 2 and 3”.

While tickets to Centre Court again proved to be the hottest thing in town, there are still tickets available for women’s week and the first few days of men’s week from the box office at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium. Some lucky fans will also be able to win tickets to the finals in the exciting competitions running before and during the tournament

Fans who purchase grandstand tickets for the first 3 days of each week can go in a competition to win coveted finals tickets by simply taking a photograph of themselves in the grandstand with their ticket or wristband for that day. If they post the photograph on the tournament’s twitter, instagram or foursquare accounts they will enter the daily draw to win finals tickets.  All details are available on the tournament’s facebook page.

“We are looking forward to a wonderful fortnight of action both on and off the court with a full schedule of activities in the tennis village. Several competitions on ARN radio stations and here in the Village means there are still lots of chances to win finals tickets. With exciting matches on courts 1,2 and 3, and the big screens showing centre court action, the Tennis Village is the place to be from 18 February to 2 March” Tahlak added.

Play begins on 18th February with the WTA Tour event that features an incredible eight of the world’s top 10. Beginning on 18th February, the greatest tennis show in the Middle East will feature Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams as well as former Grand Slam winners Petra Kvitova, Ana Ivanovic, Samantha Stosur, as well as defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska.

The WTA event will be followed by the ATP World Tour event commencing on 25 February featuring  world number 1 Novak Djokovic, defending champion Roger Federer, as well as top 10 rivals Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Janko Tipsarevic.

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Tickets for the event are on sale from the Box Office at the Dubai Tennis Stadium, Garhoud which is open from 9am to 9pm daily. Grandstand ticket prices range from 50dhs for opening rounds to 450dhs for finals, with season tickets also available.

How to tell your address in Dubai, in UAE

0
In the Philippines, it’s so simple to write or tell a residence address. It just goes like: house/flat number, floor level, building name, street, area, city/town. It goes like this: 306 Union building, Taft Avenue, Manila.

Here in Dubai, it’s kinda weird. It is not advisable to rely on street names. There’s no street name but street numbers – some numbers are repeated on the same area as well – a 17B on the left and a 17B on the right. There’s also a community number – til now I don’t know what’s it for. Some buildings have names, some have none. Floor level 1 begins at 5th or 6th floor. And, it’s a must to include a landmark, no, landmarks. And oh! be careful with your prepositions of place – as behind doesn’t really mean behind here, and beside and between might get you lost; and so “before” and “after.”  “Backside” or “opposite side” is better understood here. And oh, a 5-year old building here is still a “new building.”

So how do we say a typical address in the traditional Dubai?
507 Al Takkaful Building (Mushtaq grocery in the building), backside of RAKBank, next to mosque, Jumeirah 2, Dubai.

This happens mostly when you’re giving directions to deliveries.

That, or simply P.O. Box 12345, if receiving a mail.

BoyDubai.com learned though that planners will be introducing a better naming scheme for streets in the next 2-3 years. Here’s hoping though that there will be no Sharaf DG street, not a Noor Islamic Bank street, or any branded road like how they’ve done in some Metro Stations. 😉

How to drive in Dubai Fog?

0

Good foggy morning anew! Foggy mornings are among the scariest conditions to drive here in Dubai. It could really reduce to zero visibility at most. So be aware of the local weather conditions especially during winter season.  Here are some tips on how to drive safely during fog:

  1. Use fog lights or low beam lights.
  2. Never use hazard lights when you are moving. It confuses other motorists if you are switching lanes left or right or not actually.
  3. Give more distance. Increase your count to 5 seconds instead of the usual 2 seconds from the car in front of you. Be patient not to rush to get out of the fog.
  4. Adjust the defroster and wiper speed. Be extra cautious. The windshield might catch moist too quickly making it lesser visible.
  5. Don’t drift. Stay on your lane. It’s too risky without a clear visibility of the other lanes.
  6. Pull over to the side of the road in zero visibility. In case of really low to zero visibility, and the fog is really thick, pull over to the side of the road, stop and wait.  Turn on the hazard lights so others would be alerted that you are parked on the side.
  7. Use the right of the road as a guide. This could help you avoid counter-flowing the incoming traffic or being blinded by the headlights.
  8. Beware of camels or donkeys especially in the remote roads like Dubai Bypass Road or Emirates Road towards Ras Al Khaimah where camels and donkeys stroll freely on the streets.
When driving in fog it’s just either you slow down or stop and don’t drive at all.  Safety starts with ourselves. Let’s keep the highways extra safe for all of us.

Smart Gilas Philippines Wins Over Moutahed of Lebanon in Dubai Basketball Invitationals

11-0 was the score in favor of Moutahed of Lebanon when we arrived at a packed Al Ahli Sports Club – around 5 minutes left in the first quarter. But Smart Gilas Philippines did several rallies to end the first half on top by a thread 41-40, and eventually won the game 79-77. This is their first game in this 24th Dubai International Basketball Invitational.

Despite a lot of bad calls from one referee, the young Philippine team delighted the crowd by a sweet upset over the much taller and heftier Lebanese team who also paraded 3 imports led by Marc Salyers and some members of the national team led by Rony Fahed.

It’s like a home court game once again as the stadium is packed with 90% loud and proud Filipinos and the rest are Lebanese.

Naturalized player Marcus Douthit led Smart Gilas with 20 points and a dozen of highlight slams, Garvon Lanete with 15, Ronjay Buenafe with 10, and Kevin Alas with 9 points to add to his smart orchestration of plays.

Philippines, bannering First Security Group, takes on Al Ahli of UAE tonight, and Sporting Aramex of Jordan tomorrow. All Philippine team games are scheduled at 9pm at Al Ahli Sports Club – perhaps give Filipino fans the opportunity to watch the games live, no excuses (of work). Tickets during the eliminations are priced at AED20.
