Alex Eala Comes To Play in Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open

-

This Monday evening, Alex Eala will step back onto the courts of Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

But this is not just another first-round match.

For the 20-year-old Filipina tennis star, it feels like coming home.

Two years ago, Abu Dhabi was where her WTA 500 journey began. Back then, Alexandra was ranked outside the Top 180, playing in the UAE for the first time.

Today, she returns as ranked 45th, the first Filipina in history to reach that level.

That alone already tells an amazing story.

“I still remember my match here,” Eala shared, recalling her 2024 debut against Magdalena Fręch. “It was such a great learning experience. It was also my first time in the UAE. A lot of new experiences, and I’ve grown a lot since then.”

And grow she did.

At the start of 2025, Alexandra was ranked No. 147 and grinding through qualifying rounds and smaller tournaments. Then came a season that changed everything.

In March, she shocked the tennis world with a dream run at the Miami Open. As a wildcard, she defeated Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and World No. 2 Iga Świątek in back-to-back matches. Three Grand Slam champions in one tournament.

No Filipino had ever done that before.

She also became the first Filipino to beat a Top 10 player, the first to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final, and the first wildcard in WTA history to defeat three Grand Slam champions in a single event.

Later in the year, she made even more history at the US Open, becoming the first Filipino in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles match.

From Guadalajara to New York, Alexandra showed something special. Not just talent, but heart.

She fought back from tough starts. She stayed calm under pressure. Whether it was recovering from a 1–6 first set to win her first WTA 125 title, or coming from behind against higher-ranked opponents, she proved she belongs on the biggest stages.

When asked what has changed since her first Abu Dhabi appearance, Eala kept it simple.

“I think there are quite prominent differences in all aspects of my game. But more than that, it’s the maturity. How I approach things on court. Physically I’m more mature, a little stronger. It’s well-rounded growth.”

Now she is back in Abu Dhabi, ready to face wildcard Zeynep Sonmez in the opening round of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open.

And once again, history is within reach.

No Filipino player has ever won a WTA 500 title. Alexandra now has a chance to change that.

“It would mean the world,” she said. “Not just as a Filipino, but just as me. It would mean so much for my personal growth and my personal journey.”

Her return has already sparked excitement among the Filipino community in the UAE. Many fans showed up at Zayed Sports City even before match day, hoping to catch a glimpse of their kababayan.

With more than 869,000 followers on Instagram, Alexandra has become one of the Philippines’ most recognizable athletes. With that comes pressure, and she knows it.

“I want to say it’s business as usual, but it’s inevitable. With a lot of eyes on you, you’ll feel some pressure,” she said. “But all players feel pressure. You just have to learn how to deal with it. I think I’ve been doing pretty well so far.”

For now, her focus is on Monday.

A win against Sonmez would move her into the second round of a tournament that helped shape her journey. From wide-eyed newcomer to Top 50 trailblazer, Alexandra Eala returns to Abu Dhabi not just more experienced, but ready to inspire once again.

Her match is scheduled for Monday, 2 February, not before 5pm at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City. Perfect timing for Filipino fans in the UAE to drop by after work and cheer for their national pride.

Sometimes, the most beautiful stories are the ones that come full circle.

And Alexandra Eala’s is just getting started.
