17 Unpopular Pinoy English in Dubai

11
During my first few months here in Dubai, I find it kinda weird that some common English terms back home, isn’t popularly used or understood by many here – who are also from other nation. No, they’re not grammatically wrong. We were raised and taught American English. South Asia and this region are influenced mostly by British English. Just put it that way. Nothing wrong.

So if you’re planning to visit Dubai, just familiarize yourself with what many speak and understand here. Below are 17 of them:

1. Gas Station. Here it is called Petrol Station. Leave gas to “Methyl mercaptan,” Google it.

2. Aircon. Simply called A/C here. Makes sense.

3. CR. What CR? Comfort room? Nah! They don’t know it here. It is toilet or washroom.

4. Bell pepper. These red, orange, yellow and green vegetable is called Capsicum here. I guess anyone from culinary will know anyway.

5. Resume. CV is what they call your resume here. Curriculum vitae.

6. Alcohol. I went to pharmacy to buy alcohol and the pharmacist was like, “Are you kidding me? Alcohol is not sold in any public stores in the country…” Apparently, Isoprophyl rubbing alcohol is called “spirits.” (Eye roll)

7. Rotunda. That circular intersection, they call it roundabout.

8. Boundary. When I told my boss, I’m in “Sharjah-Dubai boundary now…” She don’t get it. Border it is.

At first I thought, letter “i” had just fell off.

9. For rent. ‘Rent’ is used in ads nowadays as well. But it is “To let” you’ll see everywhere.

10. Tutor. In classifieds we post tutor wanted/available. Here they say tuition available. This is so right.

11. Schedule (Operating Hours). Timings. Office timings is 8am to 5pm. Weird. Usually “timing” is used to refer to the point in time an event happens, as to ‘right timing.’

12. Traffic Light. Many knows what traffic light is. But if you’re on public transport, and you tell the driver to stop after the traffic light, he might shook his head. Signal is what’s better understood.

13. Elevator. They call it ‘lift‘ here. And not only that, the floor levels numbering is weird. In many cases, first floor starts at the 5th level because Parking floors (P) 1, 2, 3 or 4 comes before that. In Manila, ground floor is 1, here it is 0.

14. Iron/Ironing. Laundry shops are aplenty here and they do pressing as well. Wait what? Yes, clothes pressing is what they’re more known of.

15. McDo. Yeah, sorry I had to include this one. Filipinos are so used to ‘nicknames’ or coined terms and we thought the world understands it as well. When I tell my office mates that we eat at McDo, their eyebrows tell me, ‘What is that?’ Just say the full name, McDonalds, or sing paparapapap…

16. Ache / Aching. When at the doctor, he will ask, ‘what’s paining?’ Though, headache remains headache.

17. Passed away. “He expired” means he died. This is the weirdest I’ve heard.

So do you know of any other confusing terms?

Barbecue Night at Rose Rayhaan Rotana

0

It was a sumptuous dinner last Friday night – a barbecue by the pool at Rose Rayhaan by Rotana, a family friendly, alcohol-free hotel.

The 72-storey Rose Rayhaan by Rotana at 1,093 ft. is the second tallest hotel in the world. On Fridays, its restaurants are closed but a barbecue night happens at the 4th floor pool area overlooking Dubai International Financial Centre, The Rolex Tower and Emirates Towers.

It looks like a typical buffet setup – Arabic mezze & salad bar, the mains and dessert, and of course the grill station.

A good selection of seafood and meat is available at the grill: Spiced Chicken Breast, Rosemary Steeped Beef Tournados, Lamb Kofta, Sheesh Taouk, Garlic & Kaffir Lime Marinated Prawns, Dill & Mustard Steeped Fish Skewers, Grilled Baby Sherry, and Grilled Baby Snapper.

The prawns and fish skewers are my favorites. They’re very tasty even without the dipping sauce. The succulent beef and lamb were still juicy despite being on the serving plate for quite some time already. I like grilled fish as well but the deboning part makes it uninteresting if you’re seated in a semi-formal table.

The weather could be perfect for this terrace dining, but it is not friendly on the plate though if you’re on for chit-chats on the table – your food could get chilly as quickly.

Barbecue night, one of Rayhaan Rotana’s themed dinner, happens every Friday from 7 – 10:30pm at AED155 inclusive of beverages.

Here are the different themes happening daily, prices inclusive of beverages:

Sunday, Arabian Night – AED 125
Monday, Surf and Turf – AED 145
Tuesday, Mediterranean – AED 145
Wednesday, Flavours of Asia – AED 125
Thursday, Fisherman’s Night – AED 155
Friday, Barbecue Night – AED 155
Saturday, International Favourites – AAED 125

Jamie Rivera Dazzles Dubai, One of the Best

0

“…Ine-expect nyo ba pag Jamie Rivera puro worship worship..?” she quipped and smiled when I told her that she has exceeded expectations on her super performance last night.

Jamie Rivera brought the house down at Al Nasr Leisureland!

It seems like we’re on for a great treat when she opened the show with Somewhere and followed by a hearty medley of her timeless romantics, Hey It’s Me, I’ve Fallen For You and Pangarap Ka Na Lang Ba. It was beyond great, apparently.

She belted a Miss Saigon song I’d Give My Life For You, and later joined on stage by her special guest Jeffrey Hidalgo to sing a duet Sun and Moon from the broadway musicale.

Aside from duet with Jamie, the former Smokey Mountain member, now Direk Jeffrey Hidalgo engaged the crowd as well with his pop music and versions of Jason Mraz’ I’m Yours and Bruno Mars’ Treasure. He serenaded the ladies with Smokey Mountain classic, Can This Be Love and a whole lot more.

Jamie also gracefully grooved with folk songs like Manang Biday, Atin Cu Pung Singsing, Dahil Sa ‘Yo, and Waray-Waray.  That part of the show was very refreshing.

It was pandemonium when she rocked a 10-minute Pinoy 80’s medley including Manila, Panahon Na Para Magsaya, Annie Batumbakal, Beh Buti Nga, Bongga Ka Day, Rock Baby Rock and Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko. Despite the security, she was able to come closer to the audience and the ice rink became a dance floor.

In addition to her remarkable hits, her surprising sense of humor gave colorful life to the show. Her funny spiels and tens of punch lines delighted the crowd so much. Her take on age and how behind the technology was during her prime amused the audience. And oh, we’d definitely love to see her do the ‘Kris Aquino’ darna once again.

She shared how overjoyed she was to perform for her kababayans. Her charming and ageless personality on stage gave warmth to the audience who mostly are (literally) seated above a carpeted ice rink.

The energy was unbelievable. The mood only toned down little solemn when Jamie sang The Jubilee Song and Only Selfless Love. Then followed by an emotional Heal Our Land.  Graphics of the earthquake and wrath of typhoon Yolanda on screen left many in the audience teary-eyed.

Before her last piece, she announced that a significant part of the proceeds will go to relief efforts for the victims and survivors of the calamities. She cracked a joke about how her songs became less frequent on radio, and ended the night with a beautiful rendition of Tanging Yaman.

Indeed, content is king. It wasn’t the stage, not the venue, not the props. It’s what the performers have given the audience. Striker Events did a great job! Thank you for ushering 2014 with world class artists.

Thanks Jamie and Jeffrey for being so kind and very accommodating. Thank you Striker Events! More blessings!

14 Odd Predictions in 2014 in Dubai

0
Dubai ushers 2014 with great expectations, as usual. With 7 years to go before the Expo 2020, everything seems nowhere to go but up, literally up.  🙂

This time, let’s run through 14 random odd predictions this year, just for pun, fun.

1. More world records to break, including Most number of attempts to break world records.

2. Dubai map could have tens of version this year. With the impending constructions and detours, expect changes in routes 77 times 7 times.

3. Ikea hotdog could increase from AED5 to AED6 because many customers are still not cleaning up their own mess.

4. Absence of humor. Satirical news websites could get a reprimand. No one would dare to share comic videos about life in Dubai on social media.

5. Kabayanism. Tagalog will be the most dominant foreign language outside English and other Arabic, beating Hindi.  Many cabbies are now tuning in to TAG 91.1, the ‘2013 best FM station in Dubai.‘  Soon more Pinoy radio stations will follow suit.

6. Wifi could officially be declared as basic necessity.

7. Exodus. Massive shifting from Dubai to Sharjah and Ajman is seen due to the ridiculous rise in rents.  And traffic will ridiculously be record-breaking as well.

8. Sumthin’ Fishy. Food racism will rise as more landlords and buildings will not prefer Filipino tenants because of their ‘smelly food.’  Loud karaoke is more acceptable.

9. Free car shows. Soon university car parks could be a tourist attraction.

10. The show must go on. There will still be Sandance… possibly at a pub near you, or coffee shop.

11. Drivers Rain Party. The number one cause of accidents and traffic violations during winter could be drivers taking pictures of rain, pushing it to be trending on Twitter and Instagram.

12. Backwards. ‘Cash-on-delivery’ options for online shopping will rise. Uh-oh!

13. Scantily clad models on magazines to rise. And so it begins with Ahlan.

14. Customer service crash courses will rise. A need for this could finally be recognized.

Be inspired: Jamie Rivera Coming to Dubai

10

It’s a time of joy, a time of peace… A time when hearts are then set free… A time to heal the wounds of division…

I was 10 years old when Pope John Paul II visited Manila – the time when Filipinos embraced The Jubilee Song literally and figuratively.  The song was a hit and an anthem during the World Youth Day in Manila that has seen millions of people come united as family.

Let us tell the world of His love… The greatest love the world has known… Search the world for those who have walked astray and lead them home…

“Tell The World of His Love” has inspired the kid in me to be an instrument of hope, of peace and of prayer.

Ever since, Jamie Rivera brings us significantly motivational music, hence she was called as the Inspirational Diva. She sings praises, thanksgiving and prayers. She also gave us songs for the romantics. Who wouldn’t know the ageless “I’ve fallen for you?”

In times of calamities, Jamie’s “Heal Our Land” echoes every heart and prayer of the people.

On Friday, 10th January, Jamie will perform for the very first time in Dubai. Presented by Splash Fashion, Striker Events brings us The Inspirational Diva, Jamie Rivera Live in Dubai with the equally talented Jeffrey Hidalgo as special guest. The show will be at Al Nasr Leisureland Ice Rink. This is an official event of Dubai Shopping Festival.

Tickets are AED150 (VVIP), AED100 (VIP) and AED50 (Regular). For group reservations please contact 0566966979 or call 04-3914304. Like Striker Events on Facebook to receive more updates.

Watch Dubai’s record-breaking New Year’s Eve fireworks

1

Dubai is in the history books once again – Guinness Book of World Records actually – as the famous landmarks Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Atlantis The Palm and The World Islands glow brightest and impressed nations tonight.

Six minutes of over 400,000 glittering fireworks from The Palm and The World islands amazed the universe and was able to break the world record formerly held by Kuwait. The spectacular display was seen across the 100 kilometer span of Jumeirah shoreline

The Dubai World Record team have roped in the men and women at Grucci to produce an unimaginable programme for tonight, including a laser etching of an aerial countdown, a pixel burst flying falcon and a UAE flag and a ‘sunrise’ at midnight.” – report

Burj Khalifa has once again delighted us with its iconic towering fireworks display.

If you missed it, below are videos of the breathtaking fireworks displays.

10 moving TV commercials featuring OFWs

0

Mushy commercials are so popular and very effective in the Philippines given that the Filipinos are very family-oriented, and that almost 6 in every 10 household has a family member working overseas. So when a TV commercial or short film features the feelings and the sacrifices of families and those homecoming from abroad, one can’t help but be emotional, especially this Christmas.

Here are 10 emotionally moving commercials / short films featuring OFWs. Prepare some tissue boxes okay:

1. Jollibee – Heartwarming Surprise
A taxi driver gets emotional as he gets surprised by a Christmas video message from her daughter in the Middle East

2. Jollibee – Iba Talaga Pag Kumpleto Ang Pamilya
A taxi driver’s OFW passenger reminds him of his son working abroad and his absence in the last 5 Christmas, but…

3. Coca-Cola – The OFW Project, Where Will Happiness Strike Next
Probably the best TVC tribute to OFWs, Coke made the homecoming of 3 overseas Filipinos more sentimental and meaningful. This ad has increased the sale of tissues worldwide…

4. Titay’s Rosquillos – Missing Tatay
Simple, but the father’s expression tells how he would’ve wanted to spend time with his daughter in more fun, engaging ways.

5. SM Global Pinoy – OFWs and their Mothers
Another tearjerker, sums up the effects of sacrificing communications with the family, for so long.

6. SSS – Puro Na Lang Ikaw

7. SSS – I Miss You Nay

8. Duty Free Philippines – Babalik Ka Rin

9. Sony – Pasalubong

10. Chowking – Noel Homecoming

Christmas decorations at malls in Dubai

1
The Christmas decoration that can only be seen at malls…

Some years back, Christmas decorations at malls begin only within few weeks before Christmas. This time, right after UAE National Day, we saw many shops put up their own displays – especially the decoration like the one on the picture above.  Happy holidays pockets 😉
