10 activities in the UAE that aims to aid Typhoon Haiyan victims

5
You must have already seen the horrific wreck and havoc done by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda to the Central Philippine Islands. Every photo and video is depressing, moving. Something that we only would expect to happen in movies.

Donations from individuals and government worldwide have poured in, UAE being one of the first to donate ($10 million).

We can as well donate, although being more involved in to some initiatives would contribute to giving our fellowmen a message of hope and inspiring and encouraging them to hold on, that life will continue, must continue despite all these.

We all are praying, now here are opportunities for us to act and reach out. Here are some charity and fundraising drives happening from this weekend and later. Let’s make a difference!

Thank you, UAE for your generous heart

In behalf of the Filipino community in the UAE, please accept our heartfelt thanks for the generous donation you have given to aid the victims and survivors of typhoon Haiyan that devastated the central islands in the Philippines. This gesture once again show us the humanitarian spirit of the founding fathers of the UAE, especially Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which is being demonstrated as well by Shaikh Khalifa and other UAE rulers.

UAE donated $10 million aid plus relief goods to reach out to the typhoon-hit areas.  The nation also expressed condolence to the loss of lives and properties and infrastructure. Sheikh Khalifa also sent heartfelt and uplifting words that may the Philippines rise up quickly from this terrible devastation.

Thank you also UAE for encouraging other leaders of the world to stand together and assist in relief in times like these.

Your help will not only be able to contribute in the relief operations, but probably in the rebuilding process as well.

Thank you for the love, for your inspirational leadership and generous heart.

What is Expo2020 and Why We Should Support Dubai’s Bid?

0

As we already know, UAE is bidding to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai. World Expos happens every five years and is a key meeting point for the global community to share innovations and make progress on issues of international importance such as the global economy, sustainable development and improved quality of life for the world’s population.

In every expo, millions of visitors troop the city to explore and discover cultural and modern pavilions, exhibitions and cultural events organized by local and international participants, organisations and businesses.

As a catalyst for economic, cultural and social transformation, I am encouraging everyone to support Dubai’s bid as it will surely generate important legacies for the emirate, the UAE.

“Connecting minds. Creating the future” sounds like a perfect fit theme for the emirate. Dubai being a popular melting pot, has always proven that multicultural connections create wonders.

In today’s highly interconnected world, a renewed vision of progress and development based on shared purpose and commitment is key. While a single human mind, an individual country, or a specific community is both unique and remarkable, it is by working collaboratively that we truly advance.

A win in the bid will give the world a testament that Dubai, and the UAE is one of the front runners in terms of innovation and leadership.
A win will attract millions of visitors in the years leading towards 2020. Increase in business and trade are also in the books. That will just mean one quick obvious thing, hundred thousands of job opportunities will be created.
A win will mark the first time that an Arab nation will host the event.
In my next post, I will elaborate what winning the bid means for us living in Dubai.
You too can support the bid. Click here to find out how.

Online shopping at Mumz n Babyz

1
www.mumznbabyz.com

It’s usually the mom that does the shopping, but when it comes to online shopping, I’m in it.

Our baby, now 15 months has grown bigger and is not fitting on her infant stroller anymore. So we thought of buying a new one for the fast-growing little one. We checked several local online shops and compare prices primarily.

Mumz’n Babyz (www.mumznbabyz.com) is one of those that offers relatively lower prices of most baby gears. They have a wide range of products and brands from all over the world. Every parent’s needs from becoming a mom til the kids grow are available. Toys, nursing and feeding, apparel, health and safety and mom’s needs are in the store.

What we’re looking specifically is out of stock at that moment, but thanks to the courteous live chat representative we instantly learned that the item will be available in stock soon.

We bought a Disney Hauck Port V stroller which costs AED325 only and shipping is free (across UAE).  Hauck is a German brand with a license partnership with Disney. And since it is our first purchase, we got 10% off the price.  We got the item in good packaging and condition in just 2 working days.

Shopping experience is very easy.  You can search by product categories or by brand. The popular ones are given upfront.  The best sellers and the related products to your query is offered for your consideration as well. You can compare specs. The description and the features are very elaborate. The items dimension and the net and shipping weight are also clearly available.

There are also item reviews that could guide us how previous buyers feel about their purchases.

Payment is secured as they are a GoDaddy Verified Secure Site. But if you’re not comfortable of paying online, you can opt for Cash on Delivery option.

I think the look and feel of the UI needs a bit cleaning up to provide better user experience. Improving the visual design could equate to gaining more shoppers

Shayan, an authentic Persian food experience

0

I was a little averse when it comes to food from this region. It’s been 6 years in the UAE and this not-so-adventurous foodie got to experience real Persian food for the very first time.

Hospitality is the abstract specialty of the house at Shayan, in Al Ghurair Rayhaan Hotel.  We were warmly welcomed and ushered to our seat by a smiling crew. A curd-like, minty drink was served to mark the start of this Persian dinner indulgence.

Traditional olives and yogurt dip with fresh veggies and hot, crisp bread
Esfenaj Nargesi – my friend said it “looks like’ Laing; I thought it’s like a ‘veggie sisig’ because of the egg on top

Of the three starters served on us, I like Esfenaj Nargesi the most. It is a chopped spinach with a flavorful sauteed onions and a sunny-side up egg on top.

Another starter, Kashk E Bademjan, salty melted cheese curd with grilled eggplant seasoned with Iranian herbs & spices

They served us a platter of mostly saffron-marinated skewers and chops, with 2 variants of rice and a ‘confusing’  rice cake for the mains.

I wouldn’t remember the names of the dishes but thanks to our server who politely describe each dish he puts on the table. The platter include:

Joojeh Kabab Ba Ostokhan – skewer of marinated chicken on the bone with saffron sauce
Kubideh Ye Joojeh – skewers of minced chicken breast, onion and saffron
Chelo Kabab Kubideh – skewers of minced lamb, with Persian spices and grated onions
Tikke Masti – cuts of beef tenderloin marinated with yogurt, saffron and Persian spices

All the meat are firmly done, and very palatable to the Asian tongue, even to the less-adventurous food tourist.

That weird rice cake is called Tahchin Ghoosh Mahi – it is a pastry layered with shrimp, fish and seafood topped with sea scallops, barberries and pistachios. I thought it was sweet like “puto” in the Philippines, but it actually has a fusion of seafood flavor – although I was expecting more of the shrimps in this.  The taste reminds us of “sea gulaman.”  This one is a house signature.

It was Makhloot for dessert, a Bastani ice cream topped with sweet vermicelli noodles, some nuts and a caramel chip. Again it sounds weird when I heard ‘sweet vermicelli’, but it’s good.

Enjoying the food with a great company, Ferry, Fifi and Zeena

It was a delightful night. It exceeded whatever expectations I had. Splendid food, classical ambiance, super quality service. Too bad I had some snacks before I came to this dinner, next time I’ll make bigger room for sure. Yes next time, as I will definitely come back and recommend this to my friends. Shayan is ideally a good place to bring my visiting friends who wants to experience good food in this region.

The smiles says it all

Higher education has come a long way in the UAE

0

GUEST POST – More students than ever before are choosing to study in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and it’s very easy to understand why. For a UAE university degree can match the breadth and depth of the very best of qualifications offered at top universities both in America or Europe.

UAE universities, such as the American University of Sharjah, or the string of foreign university branch campuses making up Dubai International Academic City, the world’s only free zone dedicated to higher education, are pushing the boundaries of research and development and thereby attracting the sharpest minds from across the globe.

Yet, although sometimes hard to believe, it was not always this way. The UAE has in fact come a long way in just a short number of years. In an article by Dr Abdullah Al-Awadhi, which is featured on the website of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), a premier independent research institution, the total number of all public and private schools in 1971 stood at just 74. But by 2013, the number had risen to over 1,200 schools.

The number of university graduates at the time was less than 40 with thousands of vacant jobs awaiting them. There was not a single university then. Today, the UAE hosts 73 universities and colleges, with tens of thousands of students enrolled in them.

Dr Al-Awadhi writes, “These figures given indicate the progress made by the UAE’s education sector in the last four decades. The reality is actually much better than what these statistics show and this is reflected in the ‘UAE Vision 2021’, which contains remarkably ambitious targets.”

The founder of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, relentlessly focused on education as an essential pillar and critical factor behind progress in all fields. He once said, “The real fortune of any developed nation lies in its educated children. The progress of peoples and nations is measured by the level of their education and the access to education among them.”

Recent data gathered by the UAE’s National Bureau of Statistics reveals that the country will ensure children complete their primary education and it will reach its targeted levels before 2015. Moreover, the Pearson Foundation, which specializes in providing education services across the world, confirmed in a report that the amount of investment in education technology and e-learning in the UAE is among the highest in the world.

Dr Al-Awadhi adds, “In compliance with and in response to the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum regarding building a ‘Smart Government’, the UAE works diligently to achieve top status regionally in terms of ‘Smart Learning’, a program that is designed for the next five years.

“It includes training and development of teachers, preparing ‘smart classrooms’; building a special network for schools; distributing laptops for teachers, preparing classrooms for e-study environment, distributing smart tablets to students, receiving feedback, providing appropriate software to manage e-classes and utilizing e-syllabuses and interactive materials.

“The Smart Learning program aims to develop the education environment by using smart learning means and by improving the performance of students by empowering them and equipping them with technologies in conformity to international standards. The program also seeks to help students and teachers acquire knowledge and technical skills of the 21st century.”

Successful cause-oriented dinner for Bohol, but…

0

The dinner for a cause that aims to raise funds to aid the victims of Bohol earthquake got an astounding response of 642 donors. It was a standing room. Rocky’s Cafe was able to gather a total of AED 32,100 (about Php 377,000) which was donated to ABSCBN’s Sagip Kapamilya at the closing of the event. Thanks to Consul General Frank Cimafranca for initiating this.

Many didn’t bother to dine at all, they just gave their AED 50 and left. Truly, at times like this we become one in spirit, the bayanihan in us comes out naturally.

Dinner for a… chaos?
But… It is painful to see the absence of etiquette of many. The dinner opens, a huge chunk of diners swarmed the buffet and the first serving of food is gone in 60 seconds. Some plates are overfilling with food like there’s no tomorrow. Starters, mains, gone quickly. There was a crowd buildup. “Di mahulugang karayom.”  Only a few cared to queue. Many didn’t.

I spent half hour to have some on my plate. Other more patient diners spent 30-45 minutes to just have enough on theirs. Some came as family with kids to feed. But they don’t care. I remembered, we were in this event because we care for the earthquake victims.

What’s frustrating is, some plates are left half-emptied on the tables. They don’t care.

Do we really care?

I know I shouldn’t be telling this and just understand that it is a dinner for a cause – a charity event, but this doesn’t validate an excuse for us to lose our manners.

Do we really really care?

Next time we go to a charity dinner, make sure we have eaten some snacks at least before going, okay.

Or better, next time please let’s mind to care and care to mind the cause why we’re there.

How LinkedIn Linked Me to a Job

Back in January 2010, somebody from the e-Commerce department of The Emirates Group contacted me on my LinkedIn for an e-Commerce designer role at the company. Everything on the screening stage went so well. I got ‘hired.’  In fact, to my excitement, I severely injured my toe as I jumped with joy upon learning the good news. I did all of the required protocols, document authentications, police clearance, etc. I signed the contract.

Come a week before I’m supposed to start my work, I got a call saying that I won’t be able to join Emirates anymore. The reason: Emirates was ‘apparently‘ cutting employment that time. I haven’t started, yet, I was already redundant. They said it was a senior-executive-level decision. Hurts much. I paid for those document processes by myself. And how about my toe injury?

Second chance

Three months later, I received an invitation via LinkedIn again. This time from the manager of the UI Design Team of Emirates IT, inviting me to meet for a possible job as Senior UI Designer.

The meeting went really well. But they never got back to me for awhile.

Another great offer came from a startup web design company. Thinking that Emirates won’t get back anymore, I grabbed the opportunity and signed a deal. Two months later, I got a call saying Emirates IT wants to hire me and I just had undergo the formal hiring process. With all due respect and honor to my newly signed contract commitment, I declined with a really heavy heart. It was puzzling why I declined.

Third time’s a charm

Fast forward 11 months later, I received a message in LinkedIn from the same IT manager taking chance if I’d like another shot at an opportunity with his team in Emirates.  I met with him, he introduced me to the department manager, and everything went well.  I got the offer – close to my expectation.  Haunted by my past experiences, I was a bit reluctant that time. I was already having a great experience with the small startup company. I love what I was doing. What if, in the latter part, it will go off again? This was what’s boggling me. But in the end, I still accepted the offer and resigned from my job.

Exactly today marks my 2nd year in Emirates. I’m working as a Senior UI / UX Designer consultant for web and mobile apps. What a way to get in… It’s a bit challenging in the beginning, but I have welcomed the challenges – it continue to help bring out the best in me.

Many employers are using LinkedIn as a valuable tool to find resource. So make the most of your LinkedIn account. Enhance your visibility, here are just few things I did with my account and could help you get started:

  1. Make your profile marketable. Add the best possible keywords matching your expertise or the job you want
  2. Showcase your works. Add links to your portfolios
  3. Make sure your CV is updated
  4. Get recommended, and recommend others as well
  5. Get endorsed.
  6. Join discussions and actively participate in professional groups

LinkedIn may be the lesser exciting social network out there but it can be your best tool towards your desired job, a career perhaps.

Dinner-for-a-cause in Dubai to Aid Earthquake Victims in Bohol, Philippines

0

Sharing an email we received from the Philippine Consulate Office regarding a fund-raising initiative to aid Bohol:

——————————————————–

Dear Friends,

As you may have already known a 7.2. magnitude earthquake has recently devastated my home province of Bohol causing hundreds of deaths and injuries as well as the destruction of homes, infrastructure such as roads, schools and bridges, and several centuries-old churches that are considered national historical landmarks.  This calamity is the worst disaster that has affected our beloved province and people.

The management of the Ramee Group of Hotels, particularly its Managing Director Mr. Raj Shetty and Group General Manager Mr. Kumar Shetty, have offered to hold a Dinner-for-a-Cause starting at 6:00 p.m. at Rocky’s Cafe, Regent Palace Hotel in Dubai, for the victims of this tragedy that befell my province and its people.  The cost per plate is AED 50 but the hotel management has pledged to donate 100 per cent of the proceeds for the benefit of the earthquake victims.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Elmer De Villa, Manager of Rocky’s Cafe, for initiating this event which will always be remembered with gratitude.

As your Consul-General, I appeal to your kind hearts and ask you to join this good cause where we can be together as one community here in Dubai, enjoy good food and some entertainment while at the same time give a helping hand to those in need back home in the Philippines.  Also, please help disseminate this appeal to your friends who may wish to join and contribute to this worthy cause.

I look forward to see you this Friday, 25 October 2013 (starting at 6:00 p.m.) at Rocky’s Cafe, Regent Palace Hotel, Dubai.

Very truly yours,

Frank R. Cimafranca
Consul-General
