NOL Card, the only thing you need for transportation in Dubai

If you’re new to Dubai, whether for business, leisure, or a bit of both, using public transportation is one of your key concerns for sure. Getting around this vibrant city has never been easier, thanks to the NOL card. In this guide, we’ll delve into what a NOL card is, where to buy it, how it works, and how to reload it for a seamless Dubai experience.

What is a NOL card?

A NOL card is your passport to Dubai’s efficient public transportation system. Nol, which means “fare” in Arabic, is a new fare payment system. It is the city’s smart card system that simplifies the process of paying for various modes of transportation, including buses, trams, the Dubai Metro, and even water buses. Instead of fumbling for cash or buying individual tickets, you can simply tap your NOL card and breeze through the city.

Where to buy NOL Card

  1. Vending Machines
You can purchase NOL cards from ticket vending machines located at all Dubai Metro and tram stations. These machines are available in multiple languages, making it easy for tourists to navigate.
  2. Convenience Stores and Supermarkets
Many convenience stores, supermarkets, and even some hotels serve as authorized sales agents for NOL cards. Look for the NOL card logo displayed prominently at these locations.
  3. Online
For added convenience, you can also buy NOL cards online through the official RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) website or various mobile apps designed for this purpose. You can either collect your card from a designated pickup location or have it delivered to your place.
  4. Airport
NOL cards are also available for purchase at Dubai International Airport, making it easy for tourists arriving in the city to get their cards right away.

How NOL Card works

Now that you have your NOL card, it’s time to understand how it operates:

  1. Loading Your Card: Before you can start using your NOL card, you need to load it with credit. You can do this at ticket vending machines, sales agents, or online through the official RTA website or mobile apps. There are various credit options to choose from to suit your travel needs.
  2. Choosing Your Travel Mode: Dubai’s public transportation network is extensive and includes buses, trams, the Dubai Metro, and water buses. Depending on your travel plans, you can choose the appropriate NOL card type:
    • Silver Card: Ideal for occasional travelers who plan to use one mode of transport (e.g., the metro) for a short duration.
    • Gold Card: Perfect for those who need to switch between different modes of transport within a single journey or plan to use public transport for an extended period.
    • Blue Card: Specifically designed for students, providing discounted fares
  3. Tap and Go: Once you’ve loaded your NOL card with credit and selected your card type, it’s time to explore the city. Simply tap your card on the designated card reader when boarding and disembarking from buses, trams, or the metro. The fare will be automatically deducted based on your journey’s distance.
  4. Check Your Balance: Keep an eye on your NOL card balance to ensure you have enough credit for your travels. You can check your balance at ticket vending machines, online, or through mobile apps.

How to Reload Your NOL Card

As you explore Dubai, you might find yourself running low on NOL card credit. Here’s how to reload it:

  1. Online: The easiest and most convenient way to recharge your NOL card is online. Visit the RTA website or use their official mobile apps to add credit using your credit card.
  2. Vending Machines: You can also reload your NOL card at ticket vending machines found at metro stations, tram stations, and some bus stops. Simply follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Authorized Sales Agents: Many of these agents that sell NOL cards also offer reloading services. Just inquire at the sales counter.
  4. NOL Card Kiosks: Some metro stations have dedicated NOL card kiosks where you can both buy and recharge your card.

Dubai’s NOL card system is a traveler’s best friend when it comes to navigating this bustling city efficiently and economically. With the ease of loading, tapping, and reloading, you can focus on enjoying the incredible sights, world-class shopping, and delicious cuisine that Dubai has to offer.

So, grab your NOL card and embark on a journey through the heart of the Emirates, where the future meets tradition and unforgettable experiences await at every corner. Safe travels!

We didn’t wear our wedding rings for over a decade

For about 10+ years, we’re not wearing our wedding rings. One reason, our fingers have swollen a few years after the wedding and they no longer fit.

We didn’t bother to replace them right away. For one, we were laser-focused on things that matter more at that time – and the kids.

Also, I thought a ring is only as meaningful as we choose to put whatever meaning on it.

I’ll be honest, the absence of rings on our fingers never became a big deal. We have a good relationship, enjoyed our conversations every day, and we’re always able to get through the arguments and other struggles that marriage typically encounters. Wearing the ring or not didn’t really matter to us.

Until recently…

…the wife suggested it’s about time to wear our wedding band again. I couldn’t find any reason not to agree with her. So we discussed our preferences, and both of us agreed to have a customized ring with a profound representation of the principles we live by.

She benchmarked for good ring designs, I sketched some ideas. Until we came up with a design that 100% fit the story of our lives.

So, on our 15th anniversary – for the first time in over a decade – we proudly wear these new rings that carry a profound message. Engraved upon them are the intertwined symbols of faith, hope, and love. These three pillars have been the bedrock of our union – through thick and thin – shaping our story in meaningful ways.

Midway through our years, our faith in Jesus has saved our marriage from the brink of uncertainty. Since then, every year has been a testament to the miracles that unfold when we trust and surrender everything to Him. Having a cross in our ring will remind us of God’s unwavering presence, His boundless love, and the enduring faith that will continue to guide us through the constant twists and turns of life.

And as we enter the next chapters, we carry with us the lessons learned, the trials overcome, and the love that has grown stronger through it all. Our hearts are filled with hope for the future, knowing that faith and love will light our path.

Faith, hope, and love will continue to be the guiding forces in our lives. Together, we will embrace the unknown with open hearts, secure that our love and faith will carry us through, as how God has shown many times that he has carried us through, breakthrough after breakthrough.

Props to my wife, Raqz, for reminding me how beautiful it is to wear something as precious as this.

What does it mean when someone says “I choose you every day?”

Today, I want to celebrate and honor this amazing woman who has been with me for the past 15 years – my wife. Thank you for choosing me every day.

What I mean is… when she learns a new recipe, she wants me to be the first to try it. When she has a really good joke, she wants me to be the first to hear it. When she discovers a good therapy, she wants me to experience it first even though we know she needed it more than I do.

Also, when she catches a hot gossip, I’m always the first to know. 😉

She also makes it easy for me to choose her every day.

She’s the only one I want to bring to a new restaurant or to go on a food trip. When there’s a really good series on Netflix, I want to watch it with her. If I have a new plan, she’s the first one I want to discuss it with. Her words matter to me more than anyone else’s.

And when I have to make any decision, it’s not hard for me to say “Let me check with my wife first.” I just admire her God-given wisdom so much.

You see, love isn’t just about choosing someone on your wedding day; it’s about choosing them every single day, no matter what. And I feel blessed to have chosen Raqz as my wife.

Best decision

We’re now crossing 15 and I will never grow tired of thanking you babe for simply being you. You’re the love of my life, my best friend, my partner in everything, and God’s constant reminder of His amazing grace. Choosing you every single day has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Our love has grown because of the choices we make to love, forgive, and support each other.

Here’s to many more amazing years together! Labyu!

My Dubai Nightmare Stories (Finding the right job edition)

One

My first boss locked me in a room for a whole day. I never bothered to return and collect my salary because of trauma.

Two

My second employer hid my passport so I cannot leave and move to another company. I had to “steal” my own passport.

Three

I prematurely joined a small business as a co-founder. I endured 6 months without a salary. Only got a measly AED273.00 pay after 6 months.

Four and Five

The next 2 employers always delay the salary. It reached 3 months that I had to consult the help of the Ministry of Labor. I got my salary paid. But I got fired. Twice.

Six

I was jobless for the next 7 months, and the recession was looming. I thought of going back to the Philippines.

Seven

After that, a startup company hired me. That time, the culture was great, and I got paid on time. I even received a pay increase after only staying for a year.

Eight

Next, Emirates Airline came calling (for the 3rd time). I joined this top company as an outsourced employee and stayed for 4 years, but never experienced the benefits of a permanent EK staff.

Nine

An emerging local company contacted me and offered a very attractive package compared to Emirates. I experienced substantial growth.

Ten

After 3 years, a multinational company – a global industry leader – offered me a job opportunity with an amazing package and benefits. This was the company I had always dreamed of working for since I graduated.

“Don’t stop dreaming just because you had a nightmare.”

Jill Scott

Don’t let negative experiences define your future.

Having a positive mindset is one. But having a positive mindset rooted in faith is much more important.

Setbacks can teach us lessons and help us grow, and trusting in God’s guidance gives us strength and direction.

If ever you are in a similar situation right now, hang in there. Keep chasing your dreams and trust in God’s plan.

What led me to gaining true wisdom

A few years back, my wife and I attended a seminar about finance. We signed up because the topic felt incredibly relatable, and we knew it was just what we needed to hear that time.

When the talk finished, the host announced that there would be a breakout discussion to follow. I turned to my wife and said, “Naku babe, alis na tayo… baka ma-convert pa tayo!” We strategized our “escape”. I told her, I’ll use the toilet and will just wait for her at the door. “Miscol na lang kita. Mahirap nang bumalik sa seat, baka ma-trap tayo.”

We ran away. I had this irrational ‘phobia’ of Born Again Christians. Maybe because I’ve learned about them in the wrong way, they were always chasing us. And, I grew up as an altar boy, a lector and commentator, and even a member of the choir. I was so active in the Catholic church that I never had a window to get to know the “other Christians.”

That seminar was very enlightening, that we had a lot of takeaways. Like, I was amazed to learn that there are 2,000+ verses in the Bible about money. Since my focus at that time was improving our financial situation, the message hit me in a huge way.

At that time, we were in a season of planning our future. I was very much into self-help books, audiobooks, and seminars – some people already call me “seminarista” because of my constant attendance at these seminars.

But despite all these efforts, I felt like there was something missing. It was through these CCF events that I discovered something unexpected yet super valuable – my faith and where was it at that time.

The verse “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)” became a personal encouragement to me to not be disheartened in case my own plans don’t succeed because God probably has got way better plans for us.

Since we had a great experience at that finance seminar, we decided to attend several other events organized by the same group – marriage enrichment, parenting, leadership, business, and other money-related talks. In short, we were easily attracted by these events because they covered every practical aspect of life; And they were very relatable.

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”

Proverbs 19:21

How I got connected to Christ

Why am I sharing this?

When I eventually started to have conversations with the team behind the talks, I never felt any awkwardness or pressure like they were trying to “convert” us. They never approached things that way. We felt very welcome.

At one point, we couldn’t help but be curious, “Why the atmosphere is so happy.? What’s with this group of people – they’re friendly, easygoing, and accommodating.”

I vividly remember at one event I was in line at the buffet when I met Jay. He invited us to join them in their small group where they meet & discuss topics similar to those covered in the seminars.

I was still quite adamant to join at that time.

We kept showing up

That was just the icing on the cake, though. As we continued attending their events, we eventually realized that what we were missing the most in our lives was a personal, practical, and genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. It was quite eye-opening.

Interestingly enough, I discovered that many of the self-help-quotes I knew and loved actually had their roots in the Bible. It was such a realization.

One of the verses that I memorized easily from those events we attended says,

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2

Fresh perspective

These events provided us with a fresh perspective on life, one that is aligned with God’s perspective. Like when it comes to our marriage, we learned about the correct order of priorities, the value of having convictions, and gaining a deeper understanding of our roles as husband and wife.

We had a shift of perspective from what the world says to what God has designed marriage to be.

In our pursuit of practicality, we discovered that being practical is actually biblical. Our interest in reading the Bible grew stronger as a result.

These events became a platform for us to crave more. That’s why not long after, Raqz and I decided to attend a CCF service in Deira. We thought it might be similar to a seminar experience.

Grabe! Sa praise and worship pa lang, iyak na kami ng iyak ni Raqz. We were going through some tough times in our marriage back then, and every word in those songs hit us straight in the heart. That was an incredibly powerful experience.

The next thing we know, we were already actively attending the small group of Jay and Van, and they eventually became our disciplers.

To make the long story short, our decision to attend those events has eventually become our bridge to discovering the gospel and all the amazing things that God is doing in our lives. Not too long after, we said YES to following Jesus Christ.

Other opportunities that help me and my family grow in faith

As personal witnesses to the amazing impact of these events, Raqz and I have made a commitment to make ourselves available whenever opportunities to be involved will come.

Just like two years ago, we were asked to host an online marriage enrichment seminar called ‘Love Lockdown.’ Although my wife had some reservations initially, it became easier to say YES because we knew that God could use us to connect more people to Him, especially those who were not yet believers.

And just last month, we had the privilege of becoming speakers, along with esteemed leaders, for the Family & Finance series. It was similar to that first event that we attended 8 years ago.

How do I lead and influence others to know Jesus?

Today, we are discipling a group of couples and engaging a few others in one-on-one intentional discipleship meetings – online and offline.

We are also attending a house church along with other couples in the neighborhood.

I’ve also integrated the concept of BRIDGING into my platform and influence – through my blog.

From writing about anything under the sun, my content has changed into something more meaningful that sparks curiosity about my family’s perspective, joy, and relationship with God. And through this curiosity, we hope to create an avenue to share the transformative message of Jesus Christ.

My name is Ion Gonzaga. And with my wife Raqz, we take pride in saying how joyous it is to be rerouted into the Godly perspective instead of the worldly path through CCF’s platform of bridging events.

Once running away from a relationship with Jesus Christ, now we’re running towards sharing the goodness of having Him in our lives.

To God be all the praise and glory!

Thanks John, Coach Ever, Danica & Mira for the photos.

Small acts of kindness at the Dubai Metro

I was supposed to pick up my mom from the train station. I tried calling her to know when she was arriving and where exactly to meet me. But her phone died. I was worried and unsure.

A kind stranger on the train noticed her distress and let my mom use a power bank so she could charge a bit to at least send me a quick message. Take note, that passenger had to get off at the next station, but still offered to help.

Before that, my mom had already asked another passenger to find me on Facebook and send me a message – to say she got low bat. And indeed someone politely messaged me with full details I needed to know.

It might be petty for some, but these little acts of kindness can mean so much.

My mom was very thankful for the 2 strangers. Otherwise, she would’ve worried about how she could reach home. That was 11:00 in the evening.

This story reminds us to be kind even in the littlest things. Never underestimate the significance of your actions. I want to believe that there are far more kind people in the world than not.

It’s not about the nationality

I’ve heard this one too many times. At some point during my first few jobs in Dubai, I also asked the same question.

But just a friendly piece of advice, especially for those new to Dubai: Be more open to connecting with other nationalities at work and in the larger community.

Try to learn more about their backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. You might be surprised at how much you have in common and what you can learn from each other.

Be friendly and try to start conversations. Be willing to listen as well. By taking the first step, you can help break down barriers and build relationships.

Share your culture. Just as you express interest in learning about your coworkers’ cultures, they may be interested in learning about yours too. Share your own experiences, traditions, and customs. Trust me, they’d love to have a reliable point of contact when it comes to anything “Filipino.” Be that guy!

Don’t be intimidated, even if there are no other Filipinos at the workplace. Building relationships takes time and effort. Stay friendly and approachable. Over time, you may find that you have developed meaningful connections with your coworkers from all walks of life.

The workplace is a great opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Let’s maximize it Kabayan!

What makes you poor?

0

Buying things you want will NOT make you poor

Buying items on sale will NOT make you poor

Spending on gadgets, hobbies, and food trips will NOT REALLY make you poor

It’s not the occasional splurge or enjoying the finer things in life that drains your pocket. You don’t have to deprive yourself of life’s pleasures especially if you have the means.

It’s the lack of mindfulness and excessive spending that can lead to financial hardship. Especially here in Dubai, everything seems so “easy to buy.”

Remember, too much of anything is bad.

So if you are wise in spending and smart in your financial choices, you’ll be fine.

Will Dubai make you rich?

I often get the impression that the longer we stay in Dubai, the richer we become.

But, I say (working in) Dubai alone won’t make one rich.

Dubai, however, gives you a favorable environment to become rich. It’s up to you to maximize it.

What will determine your financial success, regardless of where you may be, are…

  • Your values
  • Your work ethic
  • Your mindset
  • Your attitude
  • Your faith

At the end of the day, it’s all about the actions you take (or didn’t take).

We shouldn’t judge a nationality by the actions of a few

“Angelo is late again. I think all Filipinos are always late.” “Diego is rude! Maybe all Mexicans are rude too.” “Joe is lazy, so all Westerners are lazy.”

“Rajib is a hard worker. Maybe all Indians are hard workers.” “Kristine can sing, so all Filipinos are good singers.” “Ahmad is so creative. I guess all Arabs are creative.”

It is not fair to make sweeping generalizations about an entire race based on one’s behavior. Work ethics and actions are shaped by a variety of factors, including personal motivation, education, and access to resources, and can vary greatly among people.

Challenge stereotypes

Stereotypes are harmful and often inaccurate. It is important to avoid making assumptions about an individual based on their nationality.

These broad generalizations can cause harm, are unfair, and feed negative prejudices.

Refocus

It is more appropriate to focus on individual qualities and to recognize that skills, abilities, and behavior are also influenced by personal and societal factors, rather than by race or nationality.

If you focus on individuals, you avoid being driven by stereotypes.

We can easily be swayed by generalizations. But remember to treat everyone with respect and kindness, all the time, regardless of nationality.

This will help to foster positive relationships and prevent harmful animosities from growing even more.

So next time you hear someone say Chinese people are this and that, tell them, so as some Filipinos, Pakistanis, Italians, Russians.

All nationalities have a fair share of positive and negative traits.

It’s not about nationality.
